Profile of the Obsessed...

In yesterdays post I wrote about a book I read last week, Crazy Love by Francis Chan. The entire book is amazing, but two chapters in particular really struck me. I gave a portion of the 4th chapter yesterday: "Profile of the lukewarm" - today I want to give you a portion of the 8th chapter: "Profile of the obsessed." It is amazing, especially if you read both lists back to back.

Profile of the Obsessed

Obsessed: To have the mind excessively preoccupied with a single emotion or topic.

  • People who are obsessed with Jesus aren't consumed with their personal safety and comfort above all else. Obsessed people care more about God's kingdom coming to this earth than their own lives being shielded from pain or distress.
  • People who are obsessed with Jesus live lives that connect them with the poor in some way or another. Obsessed people believe that Jesus talked about money and the poor so often because it was really important to him. 1 John 2:4-6; Matthew 16:24-26

  • Obsessed people are more concerned with obeying God than doing what is expected or fulfilling the status quo. A person who is obsessed with Jesus will do things that don't always make sense in terms of success or wealth on this earth. As Martin Luther put it, "There are two days on my calendar: this day and that day." (Luke 14:25 -35; Matthew 7:13-23; 8:18-22; Revelation 3:1-6)
  • A person who is obsessed with Jesus knows that the sin of pride is always a battle. Obsessed people know you can never be "humble enough," and so they seek to make themselves less known and Christ more known. (Matthew 5:16)
  • People who are obsessed with Jesus do not consider service a burden. Obsessed people take joy in loving God by loving His people. (Matthew 13:44; John 15:8)
  • People who are obsessed with God are known as givers, not takers. Obsessed people genuinely thin that others matter as much as they do, and they are particularly aware of those who are poor around the world. (James 2:14-26)
  • A person who is obsessed thinks about heaven frequently. Obsessed people orient their lives around eternity; they are not fixed only on what is here in front of them.
  • A person who is obsessed is characterized by committed, settled, passionate love for God, above and before every other thing and every other being.
  • People who are obsessed are raw with God; they do not attempt to mask the ugliness of their sins or their failures. Obsessed people don't put it on for God; He is their safe place, where they can be at peace.
  • People who are obsessed with God have an intimate relationship with Him. They are nourished by God's Word throughout the day because they know that forty minutes on Sunday is not enough to sustain them for a whole week, especially when they will encounter so many distractions and alternative messages.
  • A person who is obsessed with Jesus is more concerned with his or her character than comfort. Obsessed people know that true joy doesn't depend on circumstances or environment; it is a gift that must be chosen and cultivated, a gift that ultimately comes from God. (James 1:2-4)
  • A person who is obsessed with Jesus knows that the best thing he can do is be faithful to his Savior in every aspect of his life, continually saying "Thank You!" to God. An obsessed person knows there can never be intimacy if he is always trying to pay God back or work hard enough to be worthy. He revels in his role as child and friend of God.

"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door frames of your houses and your gates.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

As I read through both lists yesterday I felt really convicted and motivated. I realized that I do not fit into either list ... I wasn't fitting in the lukewarm profile nor was I fitting in the obsessed profile. I am caught in the middle of both. I want to be OBSESSED though!! My prayer is that I can be excessively preoccupied with Jesus!

This song by Casting Crowns fits my situation perfectly ... maybe it fits yours too...

Oh yes, to be consumed and obsessed by Him. I desire to be saturated in all things Holy and Righteous. I desire to be steeped in knowledge of my Lord.

I am definitely going to get back into this book!

Thank you for writing all that out. It really just confirmed to my spirit what God has been speaking to my heart...Christ MUST increase, I MUST decrease. More of Him, less of me...

I LOVE Casting Crowns and how their music ministers to me...awesome awesome post girl!! Thanks for the sharpening..Proverbs 27:17

Just like you, I fall more in between the two. BUT, this shows me that I want to be considered more obsessed than lukewarm.

Thanks so much for posting these lists. After reading Friday's post, I had to get a copy of the book - my husband and I are going to go through it together. In the meantime, I've been listening to Pastor's Chan's messages online - he's a really great speaker and speaks directly to my need. Thanks so much for sharing

I have been holding this in my reader until I had time to sit down and carefully go through it.

Yeah, I think all my toes are just about broken now. :)

"People who are obsessed are raw with God; they do not attempt to mask the ugliness of their sins or their failures. Obsessed people don't put it on for God; He is their safe place, where they can be at peace."

I love this. I need this. That freedom that can be found only in perfect obsession. We (me!) spend so much time "obsessing" here on earth about what others think and what to do, thinking if we just look the right way or say the right thing everything will work out and there will be peace, when in fact true peace can only be found at His feet.

Thank you for sharing these challenging posts!

Girl, I'm reading that book right now! I just told my husband that the 4th chapter on being lukewarm has spoken to me so far the most strongly.

Convicting, actually!
