Live In Harmony

"Live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble... Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But, even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed... in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander."
1 Peter 3:8, 13-16

When we are faced with difficult people it can be really hard to do as the passage above says. When we have someone attacking us, it's our nature to go on the defensive and fight back. But, Christ calls us to a higher path:

When people are gossiping about us we are called to live in harmony with them.
When they purposely say things to cause us pain we are called to be sympathetic.
When others hate us we are called to love as brothers.
When we're speared with a sarcastic joke, we are called to be compassionate.
When we're criticized we are called to be humble.
When we're being insulted we are called to be gentle.
When we are mocked we are called to be respectful.

... and always, we are called to have the gospel on the tip of our tongue... ready to share the hope that lies within us.

Seem impossible? It is only possible because we have set Christ in our hearts... and with Him ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE.

What an awesome reminder to be more like Christ in all our decisions and actions. Even when it is tough.

friend, thanks for this today! I definitely need to learn to be more gentle and humble when people do those things or say those things to me! What a great reminder!

The only way it is possible... Jesus Christ.

How true my precious sister and how very often I've been challenged to love accordingly!

Haven't perfected it yet; I don't imagine I'll reach perfect understanding in the matter on the front end of eternal life, but I endeavor (through God's strength) to try.

Love you.

It is only because He lives in me that I can do any of those. That is SO true. How difficult and how freeing. I do not have to do it on my own. Thanks, Lauren.

What a beautiful post!

This past year has brought more gossip ... more judgment ... more slander ... than I ever could have imagined. Yet, I know that I know that I know that we have done nothing wrong; we have done what Christ has called us to do. We continue on ... doing all that He has called us to ... without fighting back.

Excellent series of contrasts pitting a godly response to a worldy behavior. I've never seen them all written out together like that. Great job.

thank you so much for this awesome encouragment and reminder (it was especially good for me to read this today - i got a nasty mean email)!!! it's beautiful to think about the fact that Christ reconciled us to God and so therefore we should be reconciled to one another.

Great post! :)

I have a quick question to ask you, and if you wouldn't mind responding to the question as soon as possible, and commenting your answer on my recent post, that would be great! :)

The question is:
"How many times do bloggers check their email daily?"
So, how many times do you check your email daily?

The reason why I am asking the question is because I am working on a statistics project for my college class.
Thank you so very much, Lauren, and God bless you and your family!
Love and blessings in Christ,
Rachel M.

What amazes me more is the great number of God's body who are striving -- however difficult -- to obey Him, by His grace. And to think that some say religion is an opiate for the masses? There's nothing mind-numbing about our faith. It challenges and stretches us to grow in ways we could never do by ourselves. But then, that's our God. He enables and empowers. Indeed, He makes all things possible.

Oh wow, this is amazing! I'm going to print it out, so that I can look to it when needed. It takes practice to not take offense, or act unkindly back to someone who has "wronged" you. I always wait a couple of days before I react. By then, I'm over it, and decide that I will try to put myself in their shoes, to figure out why they would do what they did.

Thank you for this reminder. It's so easy to be in my flesh and not in the spirit when I'm facing these trials.

Great post, I have to remind it often. Some days it´s really hard, but when I think about it - it´s hard because I want to go through it alone, but with God I can do it easily. So thank you for reminder!

Beautiful post and oh so true! Just the other day I was praying that God would truly teach me to always love others...not just those that love me, but those that don't. It's not possible in our strength alone, but only in His. So glad He affords us the strength.
