Yard Sale Results

Happy Monday folks! Well, we had our yard sale on Saturday and to be totally honest it didn't go as well as I had hoped. We got up at 5:30am and set everything up in our driveway and front lawn. It was pretty much all set by 7:15am. We had a few people come, but by 8:30am we still didn't have much traffic. We live directly behind our church. Our church is situated right on one of the busiest streets in our city. So, an executive decision made by our Pastor's wife had us moving the sale to the church parking lot. We had it all set up there by 9:15am. We did get more traffic, but still not a lot. A few ladies from church had donated some baked goods and I baked up a storm the night before. We had several posters that said we were adopting and all the money would go to our adoption. I had an "Ethiopia Facts" poster that listed off the heartbreaking statistics found here. I included pictures of orphanages and street children. I had a jar for donations. John went a block down the road and spent over 2 hours holding up 2 signs that said "we're adopting from Ethiopia" and "yard sale." In the nearly 100 degree heat! Most people never even glanced at the signs. When they tried to bargain and I explained it was for our adoption they looked completely confused and then I explained further and pointed to the signs. They usually just said, "oh okay" and paid the whole dollar. I must admit that I felt completely discouraged. I worked so hard all week. I spent hours on the signs and posters to motivate people to help us. So many amazing people donated wonderful things to our yard sale. By noon there was no one coming anymore, so we packed up. It didn't even look like we'd made a dent in the stuff. I went home while John broke down the tables and I counted the money. It really wasn't  bad. We made $435. Not too shabby, right? Definitely more than I thought was in that box! I have to admit I had a grander vision. You see, a lot of adopting families have had yard sales recently and most have made $1,000 - $3,000. My goal was at least $1,000. I was pretty sad that we didn't even make it halfway there. Then I felt convicted because...

God's plan is perfect. God's timing is perfect. God knows all of our needs and He will meet them in His own way!

So we're going to have another yard sale this coming Saturday. We still have so much left over that I hope we can at least raise the same amount as this past Saturday. This time we'll start in the church parking lot! I am committing to praying every single day for our funds and our yard sale. We have approximately $10,500 left to raise for Tucker. Will you please pray with us? Will you commit to praying every day this week for our yard sale and our funds for Tucker? If so, please let me know in the comments. That's just a minute or two out of your day for 6 days... will you be able to make that sacrifice for our little guy this week? Thank you in advance to all of you who will commit to praying! You are precious each and every one of you!

(one of the major perks of the sale... I got to meet Chloe from Tryin' to Throw My Arms Around the World!!! She literally lives 2 minutes away from me! We just recently discovered that and she came to the yard sale! She's super sweet and absolutely beautiful! (plus she's a mets fan and one of my friends from high school plays for the mets right now!) :P

I will definitely pray for you, Lauren!! I know it must've been discouraging, but that's still a good amount to make and I was just thinking, if your town is anything like ours, everyone was having dance recitals this Saturday! Several dance centers around here had them, so it may just have been an issue of people being busy. My FB has been filled with all of the Moms' recital pics this weekend! LOL! So, keep the faith......I bet this weekend will be a great turn-out!

It's amazing too how many people just don't have a clue about adoption. When I told people we were wanting to adopt one day, they just were like, "Oh" and didn't say another word or ask us any questions or anything. And these were people from my church!

That's so neat to get to meet another blogger! Hope you have a great week!

Geez, Lauren, I'm sorry. I can't imagine people being so ignorant or maybe just wrapped up in themselves. It's a disturbing symptom of deeper issues in American culture, I think.

Have you tried newspaper ads for the yard sale? The newspaper here lists them for free.

I promise to keep praying. Hugs to you.

This is just about the same thing that happened with our yard sale last month (we made $465 in 2 days)! I felt hurt when I realized some people just didn't care. Then I realized that they totally don't get it. They don't understand that we are ALL called to care for orphans... that turning a blind eye simply isn't acceptable! I pray for eyes and hearts to be opened to the love our Father has for His children. And I pray for your little guy, that God would hold him when you cannot. Blessings to your family!

My eyes welled up with tears as you posted your financial needs and then requested nothing more than our prayers for you and your family. Amazing the price we can put on our time...and our prayers...when we won't stop to lift another up. You have humbled my heart and refocused my mind...and for that I thank you!

You have my prayers this week!!!

I will pray for you, Lauren! We have been discouraged on the yard sale front too. But our God is still BIG, and our Jesus is still the same. God loves your Tucker and wants Him home. Believe that and cling to that, and I will be praying that this Saturday's sale is massive!!

Hmm, I guess we'll just have to pray harder then! Have you thought about putting an ad in the Virginia Pilot? I know a lot of garage salers use that as their resource.

And it was wonderful meeting you, too! I'm gonna try to work my running schedule around so that I'm able to help out next week...I'll keep you posted :)

And you have a friend who plays for the Mets?! Awesome! What's his name?

Praying for big big things this week! Did you put the yard sale on Craig's List and in your local paper?

We did two yard sales and only made around 500 dollars. I was hoping for a lot more too but if you sell the same amount this week as you did last week then you will have made a good amount!

Also we had the confused looks about the adoption too and one lady flat out said "it's a yard sale, I don't care what it's for I will not pay that price" (3 dollars for a pair of brand new, tags still on, priced 90.00, black dress pants). Made me soooo mad!

i am so sorry to hear that you didn't make as much as you had hoped. BUT your attitude and faith in God to provide is so refreshing! Remember Matthew 6:26 : )
I will be praying that this week goes much better and a lot of people will come and be willing to pay and donate to Tucker!!

Bless your heart.

It is hard to see the final picture until the end, but soetimes God is working so HE can get the glory in a way that you could never see.

We had to come up with so much money last year. Between the final adoption payments, flight & trip expenses, and our daughter getting married ( yes, Chloe) I don't know how we payed for everything. My husband doesn't make that much! lol. But somehow everything was payed for!!

I look back and stand amazed. Stand back and give HIM the glory, because it had nothing to do with our plan of getting money.

We will continue to pray. We get it.

And can you imagine if you knew David Wright?? Chloe would die a thousand deaths with a goofy smile on her face. lol.

Though she loves and adores her husband, DW has a special place in her Mets heart. lol.

PS rapha is the word verification!! RAPHA!! healer. cool.

You are so adorable! I love how you think!!! Sorry it didn't go as you were hoping, but you are so right about the fact that God knows!! :)

I definitely will pray for your little man and the yard sale and getting him home! I am not sure where you live, but you could look to see if there is a bookoo.com group in your area.... you can advertise for free and other yard salers LOOK for yard sales to go to!!

God Bless!

Oh Lauren, I am so sorry! I always have super high expectations going into things! I know we all know that God is in control, but sometimes it's hard to remember that in the moment! I am committed to praying with you and and for you this week!!

I can imagine how disappointed you were (especially after all the preparation that went into it), but I'm glad you didn't let the enemy creep in and steal your joy. God knows what it takes to get Tucker home to his mommy and daddy, and He already has it all figured out. HUGS, Lauren, and I will be praying too!

Sorry to hear that your yard sale did not go as well as you have hoped. You should list your stuff for sale online. There are several sites that will allow you to do so. I recommend www.privategaragesale.com because it's great and totally free.

Alison said...

Will definitely be praying! Garage sales are tough...you just never know. We have done several...hoping to have one soon to raise money for our adoption! We always put ours in the newspaper and online. Praying this next one will go great!!!

Veronica said...

So sorry your yard sale didn't have as good of a turnout as expected. Maybe you can try putting it on Craigslist and also your local paper maybe? Even some signs in your neighborhood saying you'll be having a yard sale might be good.

You can count me in on the prayers every day this week for sure!!!

P.S. Hope the jewelry I sent will sell. I know it's not anything huge, but hopefully someone buys it!

Lauren,
I will be praying for you!!! It is discouraging when we feel like people don't get what we are so passionate about- I know the feeling and I don't have a good answer for dealing with that except to pray about it...that's what I do :-)
I am so, so, so excited for you.
Love,
Kristen

Keep me posted.

Hi Lauren;

Sorry about your tag sale, though what you made is really a lot I think.

God is faithful. I have learned sometimes it isn't about what I do...but it is about trusting Him to do it. I think sometimes he is saying, "Kimmie, pull up a chair, get your sunglasses (you will need them because of the splendor of what I am about to do) sit back and enjoy my workings on your behalf!"

Perhaps He is saying this to you to?
